With a history dating back to the Doomsday Book, and with fashionable Marylebone Village and Cavendish Square as its centrepiece, the Howard de Walden Estate comprises one of the more glamorous areas of London. Kenyon was delighted to be given the opportunity to contribute to the maintenance of this historic Georgian estate.
External restoration and refurbishment works were undertaken to various properties including high value premises on Marylebone High Street.
Its location and the density of the buildings in the area had the potential to impose severe restrictions on this contract's smooth running. Access was particularly difficult, a problem exacerbated by the need to hoist over ten tonnes of materials up to the roof area. Kenyon’s scaffolding partners produced a fully custom designed scaffold that successfully addressed these demanding circumstances.
Crittal had supplied the original windows so it was engaged to provide matching modern replacements. Kenyon and Crittal worked together to obtain all the relevant planning and local authority consents. Extensive alterations were made to the roof structure so that the old flat roof covering could be replaced in its entirety. The roof was raised by approximately a metre, with the result that the existing metal escape stairs had to be adapted and extended. Areas of slate roof received sensitive restoration through the sourcing of replacement slates that matched the existing slate work. The limestone banding in the brickwork was given specialist cleaning; additional repairs were then made to the brickwork. Careful attention was focused throughout on matching new to old. Existing joinery was repaired and extensive redecorations were undertaken throughout.
